Black Boxes
GTA were approached by a renowned chef, to develop, modernise and extend his family home in the picturesque village of Dale, in Pembrokeshire. This was a particularly special site. The original building had been poorly extended multiple times over its history. GTA's approach from the outset, was to strip away all of these incongruous structures, to reveal and express the beauty of the original stone cottage. Rather than simply extend the house with a storey rear extension, thereby making the entire central section of the property dark, a unique approach was adopted, to slide the proposed ground floor extension away from the house, with a glazed link, creating a green central, open courtyard, and stagger the first floor bedroom extension to the side, creating a series of separate burnt larch, black boxes that look through and down onto the courtyard whilst framing the views over to the sea.
